Its origin dates back to the reign of King D. Manuel I of Portugal, built by the Confraternity of São Pedro Gonçalves Telmo, formed by fishermen and sailors. For this reason it is also known as Church of the Maritime Commitment.

Church of Renaissance style, has also suffered with the earthquake of 1755 and has been partially rebuilt. In the master-chapel there is an image of São Pedro Gonçalves Telmo, protector of fishermen and men of the sea. In its ceiling you can see a perspective painting, and the remaining decoration is Baroque style. Reportedly this church had a banner of red silk, with the royal arms embroidered in gold, and a caravel, a symbol of the Maritim of Tavira, but it has been stolen.
