Church of Santa Maria do Castelo

Located in the parish of Santa Maria very close to Santiago Church, Santa Maria do Castelo is the mother church of the city of Tavira.

The Church of Santa Maria do Castelo is a 13th century building, rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. Maintains the structure and the Gothic portal. Inside the master-chapel is the tomb of seven Knights of Santiago killed in an ambush by the Moors, the legend associated with the conquest of the city.
